Third generation mobile service can start in Hungary too

31 August, 2004 the Hungarian National Communications Authority (NHH) invited a tender for the right to use radio frequency bands available for the provision of third generation mobile communication service.

As Dániel Pataki, Chairman of NHH told they are confident because the tender is invited in due time to strengthen the telecommunications sector that is a driving force in Hungary's economy. With the invitation of the tender NHH aims at achieving maximum social benefit through satisfying the requirements of the users, the government and the investors.

At the National Communications Authority tender four technically equivalent frequency blocks can be obtained for the provision of third generation mobile communication service for a period of fifteen years to create the opportunity for fair market competition with equal chances. The tender will ensure, among others, that the service will be available to the users from January 2006.

To enable start of service provision as soon as possible the state will share the risk with the competitive sphere. To keep investors' interests in mind NHH enabled in the tender conditions the bidders winning a frequency band to pay the usage charge by installments, in proportion to revenues.

In addition to improving the quality of conventional mobile phone calls UMTS will significantly increase data transmission rate and thereby make Internet-based multimedia services available with mobile phones too.
