MINDS project is ready for the market

European news agencies aiming for a mobile media breakthrough with new concepts and services

Berlin/Luxemburg 3/6/2005 - After 18 months of research and development the European mobile media project MINDS (Mobile Information and News Data Services for 3G) is ready for the market. In Berlin on Friday the consortium, including five national news agencies and four technical partners, presented 12 innovative mobile media scenarios and new business models. These are intended to simplify and standardise the relations between European publishers and mobile network operators. MINDS was funded by the European Commission through its eContent programme. Despite higher network bandwidth thanks to 3 G technology and a new generation of powerful mobile phones with video and gaming features, mobile data revenues still lag behind industry expectations.

To coincide with the package the news agencies Friday also announced a cooperation with Ericsson, the world's leading telecommunications supplier. dpa-infocom, the multimedia subdivision of Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa, Hamburg) and the national news agencies of Austria (APA), the Netherlands (ANP), Switzerland (sda-ats) und Hungary (MTI) plans to market the concepts and products created in the MINDS project in an operative organisation. MINDS International is intended to serve as a framework for national European news agencies to develop and promote mobile media services. MINDS International and the Swedish mobile technology company plan to market mobile media services based on Ericsson's Internet Payment eXchange (IPX) solution for content payment.

The technical partners of the MINDS project - arvato systems (Gütersloh), CoreMedia AG (Hamburg), the Fraunhofer FOKUS institute (Berlin) and the international publishing organisation ifra (Darmstadt) will remain as partners of MINDS for research, development and application services.

Some MINDS services are already proving themselves in the market. In March 2005 dpa-infocom launched a mobility platform for German newspapers. It offers publishers an simple and cost efficient way of operating mobile media services such as SMS voting, competitions, local headlines or a mobile access to classified advertisements. 16 newspapers already use the service. The Dutch agency ANP has currently started the mobile audio service „Niuz“. The Austrian agency APA has developed an extensive investor relations service for professional financial investors and brokers.
